A new U.S. Postal Service rule went into effect on Christmas Eve, and it could determine whether your mail-in ballot is counted.

While before the change we could expect our mail would be postmarked on the day we mailed it, a reorganization of the postal system will put an end to that for most of us. Rather than indicating when the mail was received, the postmark indicates when it was first processed. With the reorganization, over 70% of post offices will be 50 or more miles from their regional processing centers—25% will be 150 or more miles from their processing centers.

This also affects other time-sensitive mail, such as tax documents. But while the IRS allows private companies like UPS and FedEx to deliver tax documents, that is not the case for all election boards.

So, mail in those ballots as early as you can. Don’t let your say in who runs the government depend on a postmark!
